Valheim Equipment & Food Progression Guide

Last updated: June 2026 | Game version: 0.219.14+

Knowing what to craft and when is half the battle in Valheim. Waste materials on the wrong armor or weapon, and you'll struggle against the next biome's enemies. This guide covers the optimal equipment progression โ€” armor, weapons, food, and meads โ€” for each stage of the game.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Armor Progression

Valheim has three armor types: light (troll hide), medium (root), and heavy (bronze/iron/silver/padded/carapace). Heavy armor offers more protection but costs more stamina for movement.

Armor Set Comparison

Set Biome Total Armor Move Speed Set Bonus Materials Required
Leather Meadows 8 0% None 6 Leather Scraps, 6 Deer Hide
Troll Hide Black Forest 16 +5% (sneak) +15% Sneak 29 Troll Hide, 30 Bone Fragments
Bronze Black Forest 32 โ€“5% None 27 Bronze, 6 Deer Hide
Root Swamp 20 0% Resist Pierce 20 Root, 4 Ancient Bark, 2 Leather
Iron Scale Swamp 48 โ€“10% None 60 Iron, 10 Deer Hide
Silver Mountains 54 โ€“10% Resist Frost 63 Silver, 2 Wolf Pelt, 1 Chain
Wolf Fur Mountains 26 0% Resist Frost 24 Wolf Pelt, 2 Silver, 4 Chain
Padded Plains 78 โ€“10% None 105 Iron, 15 Linen Thread
Carapace Mistlands 96 โ€“10% Resist Pierce 108 Carapace, 20 Scale Hide
Ashlands Ashlands 108 โ€“10% Resist Fire Flame Metal + Ash materials
  1. Leather โ†’ Skip for Troll Hide. Leather is fine for Eikthyr but farming Troll Hide from the Black Forest gives better protection and a sneaking bonus โ€” well worth the 29 troll kills.
  2. Troll Hide โ†’ Root Set (chest) + Iron Legs/Helm. The Root chest gives pierce resist (critical for Bonemass and deathsquitos), and iron legs/helm give better overall armor. This hybrid is meta for mid-game.
  3. Root Chest + Padded Legs/Helm. Once you reach the Plains, upgrade legs and helm to Padded but keep the Root chest for deathsquito resistance.
  4. Full Carapace or Carapace + Feather Cape. The Feather Cape (late Mistlands) eliminates fall damage โ€” a game-changer for Mistlands exploration.

Do not craft: Full Bronze armor (too expensive for the stats), Full Iron Scale (iron is better spent on weapons and tools).

โš”๏ธ Weapon Progression

Weapon Trees by Type

Carapace 115 8 Wood, 4 Carapace Ashlands endgame
  1. Crude Bow โ†’ Finewood Bow โ€” upgrade immediately after Eikthyr. The range and damage jump is massive.
  2. Finewood Bow โ†’ Huntsman Bow โ€” your Swamp and Mountains workhorse.
  3. Huntsman Bow โ†’ Draugr Fang โ€” endgame bow. Poison DOT stacks and keeps ticking through boss phases.
  4. Bronze Mace โ†’ Iron Mace โ€” for Bonemass. The iron mace is your blunt specialist.
  5. Iron Mace โ†’ Frostner โ€” Frostner's slow debuff makes Mountains and Plains exploration much safer.
  6. Frostner โ†’ Porcupine โ€” for Yagluth and Plains farming.
  7. Sword branch: Mistwalker for Mistlands, Blackmetal if you can't find Mistlands ore yet.

๐Ÿฒ Food Progression

Food in Valheim determines your max HP (survival) and max Stamina (DPS + movement). Always eat three different foods. The meta is 1 HP + 1 Stamina + 1 Balanced, or 2 HP + 1 Stamina for boss fights.

๐Ÿงช Mead & Potions Reference

Meads are crafted at the Cauldron with a fermenter. Each mead takes 2โ€“3 in-game days to ferment.

Fire Resist 10 Honey + 5 Coal + 2 Surtling Core +75% Fire resist 10m Mandatory for Ashlands
Barley Wine 10 Barley + 10 Cloudberry +30% Stamina 10m Low (specialized)

Mead Usage Tips

  • Always carry 3โ€“5 Health Meads into any biome you haven't cleared yet.
  • Poison Resist is not optional for the Swamp โ€” Bonemass's poison does 90 dmg/tick without it.
  • Fire Resist is not optional for the Ashlands โ€” the base terrain damages you without it.
  • Tasty mead is great for long building sessions, but risky in combat (reduced stamina regen after the buff).
